Presentation(s)
This practical and interactive workshop will use a case based approach to the assessment and management of pain and delirium in palliative patients. The multi-dimensional nature of pain (total pain) and various analgesics including opioids will be discussed. Delirium is frequently missed, greatly complicates symptom management and can have a devastating effect on patients, family and health care providers. Participants will be taught how to recognize and manage it using various approaches including anti-psychotics.
3 Learning Objectives
Using a case based approach, participants will be able to: 1) Outline a pragmatic approach for the diagnosis of delirium at the bedside.
2) Describe a framework for managing delirium including identifying underlying causes and initiating pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
3) Define palliative sedation and describe the indications, medications, monitoring and ethical considerations in its use.
